Customer story

Over a decade of partnership with Fingrid

Nestor and Fingrid have worked together for more than ten years. In summer 2026, we visited Fingrid’s Nuojuankangas substation in northern Finland to see our solutions at work in the country’s national power grid.

Fingrid is Finland’s electricity transmission grid operator, majority-owned by the Finnish state. It transmits electricity across the high-voltage backbone grid from power plants to distribution networks and industry, and ensures that the power system stays balanced and reliable. When it comes to critical national infrastructure like this, the communications networks behind it must meet equally high standards.

Visiting Nuojuankangas

In summer 2026, a small team from Nestor traveled to the Nuojuankangas substation to see a Fingrid site where our products are in use.

Visits like this matter to us. On site, we can see how our cabinets, panels, and cables fit into the bigger picture, and what it is actually like to work with them day to day. These visits also often give us valuable feedback from our customers.

Communications are the backbone of a substation

At the substation, our products are used in the site’s communications infrastructure. Put simply, the fibre cross-connect cabinets serve as the central hub of the substation’s fibre optic network, the point where fibre connections are gathered and from which they are distributed onward.

The communications system is complemented by a range of equipment, including firewalls, wireless access points, telephones, and video surveillance cameras and recorders. Incoming fibre routes and cables are terminated in a fibre splice cabinet. Our other products are used throughout the installation wherever connections need to be extended or terminated in a controlled way.

Products installed at the site include:

Substation environments place specific demands on equipment. Products must be durable, straightforward to install, and easy to maintain, and the cabling must stay organized for years to come. A well-structured fibre network speeds up troubleshooting and modifications, which translates directly into higher operational reliability.

Developing products together with our customer

A long-term partnership is about more than supplying products. Together with Fingrid, we have also carried out product development, incorporating the customer’s needs and improvement suggestions into our designs. This collaboration has covered areas such as cross-connect cabinets, termination panels, and the cables used with them.

The goal has been clear: our products must perform in the customer’s applications exactly as intended. Feedback from the field is invaluable here. When installers and maintenance staff tell us what works in practice and what makes their job harder, we gain insights we couldn’t get anywhere else.

This kind of collaboration benefits both sides. The customer gets solutions designed around its own needs, and we continuously learn more about what demanding operating environments require of our products.

Reliability through collaboration

Electricity transmission is a service most people only notice when it stops working. That is why the systems behind it, including communications, have to meet such high standards. We are proud to play our part in supporting the reliability of Finland’s power system.

Thank you to Fingrid for our long-standing partnership and for a rewarding visit to Nuojuankangas!
